Where on (Google)Earth? #8

I'm not gonna give any clues....not until there's at least a few guesses.

Okay, this is a tough one. I don't see any obvious signs of civilization (roads, bridges, etc.) which ought to help, but I may be completely missing on the scale. The river appears to be a significant one (which makes the lack of civilization even more puzzling), though I'm guessing in a dry region, based on the lack of apparent vegetation. I find myself in dire need of a scale bar. Gosh do I love a good challenge!

P.S. I'm trying to use the width of the imagery strips for a general sense of scale, but that's not necessarily a very reliable strategy.

Besides a scale bar....which way is north???? It is an arid region with low wave energy.....slowly narrowing in, if I just knew which was was North.....

north is up....I haven't got that tricky yet

as for scale, the image is roughly 50 km across

Good call on the low wave energy, Katie! It took me a while, but I finally stumbled on it. Here it is.

How Funny - I didnt even look at Madagascar as I have been looking at doing some work on the North part of the island and thought I knew the shoreline there - oh well. I did a quick look at all other sheltered N/S coastlines -- then decided I really should do some of the work I am being paid to do.

Thanks for the link!

you guys are good...i'm impressed...i'll have to keep making them more difficult!

do either of you know the name of that river?

According to Google Earth (enable the "Water Bodies" layer under "Geographic Features" and then zoom out) it's the Onilahy River. It's in the info box if you double click on my placemark.

Ok - So the geologic controls on coastal sed transport are strange here. The weird rock-thing (it is early here) sticking out and making that strange pocket beach sort of thing...with a spit on the back side. But there is what looks like extensive reef here.
Do you know anything more about this area??

FYI My Madagascar River Figure

I know virtually nothing about the geology of Madagascar.

I was wondering about that island in the upper left corner of the image too...it doesn't look like a purely depositional feature (e.g., barrier island)...maybe it is a reef, like Katie mentioned? Or, some other erosional remnant of the underlying geological situation?

I have no idea....I wish I had the time to find out now!
